United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Shadow Report
AFDO has been on a reference group to develop a shadow report on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD). The reference groups include People with Disabilities Australia, Disability Advocacy Network Australia, Queensland Advocacy Incorporated, Disability Discrimination Legal Service NSW as well as other organisations. The shadow report is being compiled by law firm Phillips Fox DLA. A series of focus groups were held in late 2009 and a survey on the internet attracted over 200 responses. This information is being collated and will form the basis of the report to the United Nations. Australia is expected to report to the UN on its progress in implementing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the intent of the shadow report is to detail how the implementation is progressing from the community perspective. The compilation of the shadow report is way ahead of the Australian Government report which we were led to believe would be released for comment in March this year.
