Member Application Information

The Australian Federation of Disability Organisations (AFDO) is the peak national body for Organisations of people with disability. A list of
our current members, constitution and strategic plan are available on this web site.

National and State organisations of people with disability are invited to join AFDO. (See membership criteria below.)

Members can vote at general meetings and nominate a representative to stand
for the AFDO Board.

Membership fees are set annually by the AFDO Board and are related to organisations annual income. The current fee schedule (ex GST) is:

  National and State Members
  Income                                   Fee
  $0                                         $  50
  Between  $1 - $99,999 	   $ 105 
  $100,000 or more                   $ 265 
  
  Associate Member fee $50.

To apply for membership, send us in electronic format (word documents or html):

  • A letter requesting acceptance as a member;
  • A copy of your organisations Constitution;
  • A copy of your organisations last Annual Report;
  • A statement outlining:

    • how your organisation is managed;

    • its membership; and
    • why your organisation should not be a member of one of AFDO's existing members.

Membership criteria
National Members

Organisations whose members come from across Australia and:

Whose members are either:

  • people with disability, or
  • both people with disability and organisations of people with disability;
  • More than half their members are people with disability;
  • They are managed by people with disability;
  • They are either;

    • incorporated associations or;

    • companies limited by guarantee.
  • They exist to promote the rights and wellbeing of people with disability;
  • They do not have any purposes contrary to the purposes of the AFDO; and,
  • They have individual members in at least 4 states or territories and a minimum of 50 individual members in each of the four states and territories.

State-based, cross-disability organisations
State or Territory based cross-disability organisations that are:

    Either;

    • incorporated associations or;

    • companies limited by guarantee;
  • Have at least 50 individual members who are people with disability; and,
  • Are not eligible to be members of a national organisation member of
    AFDO.

State-based, cross-disability organisations are represented by a single position on the Board, voted on by members in this category.
Members in this category can not vote for other Board positions.

In exceptional circumstances, AFDO can consider applications from organisations that do not meet the membership criteria outlined
above.

Associate Members
Are organisations that agree with the philosophy of AFDO but which are not eligible to become full members of AFDO.
