People with disability are optimistic that recent Australian Government initiatives herald a new era of positive cooperation in disability policy.

Jeremy Muir, Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Federation of Disability Organisations, said that people with disability welcomed the new Federal approach to disability policy, which puts the human rights of people with disability at its centre.

Australian Federation of Disability Organisations welcomes new CEO
The Australian Federation of Disability Organisations welcomes its new interim CEO Ms Samantha Jenkinson who will be filling the role until November 2007.

Outgoing CEO Maryanne Diamond has moved on to an international development role with a major disability services organisation.

Ms Jenkinson has been involved in advocating and promoting the rights of people with disabilities since the early 1990’s when she became involved with student politics at university.

Australia signs United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The Australian Federation of Disability Organisations (AFDO) congratulates the Australian Government on its signing the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at the United Nations on the 30th March 2007.

This is an historic day in the lives of people with disabilities here in Australia and around the world.

“The Convention upholds the values of all people with a disability irrespective of the type of disability, their language or geographic location”, AFDO Chairperson, Samantha Jenkinson said.
