The Australian Federation of Disability Organisations (AFDO) is a Disabled People’s Organisation and a National Cross-Disability Peak, representing people with disability and their families. We are looking for an experienced Manager with highly developed policy and project management skills to fulfil this role.

Reporting directly to the CEO and part of the Leadership Team, you will be responsible for managing and developing national systemic policy, and submissions and responses to governments, enquiries, committees, hearings, legislative or policy changes, and more with input and contribution from our member organisations along with existing and new initiatives or projects in line with AFDO’s Vision, Mission and Strategic Plan. Your role will also include identifying and obtaining funding or alternative funds for implementation, as well as seeking fee for service opportunities.

To meet the mark, you must have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in a senior policy role plus experience in a service development role and/or development and management of projects and programs. Your team includes direct reports of existing key staff and the on-boarding of new project staff as initiatives are funded or commenced. You will also have operational responsibility for the organisation along with the CEO. You will have the ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities, organise work and achieve objectives within timelines and budget.

This is a part time role (0.8 EFT) working Tuesday to Friday each week, with an initial 12 month contract and potential for renewal subject to results. We have a remote operating environment and great flexibility along with other benefits. Ideally, we are seeking the candidate to commence as soon as possible.

Hours of work: 60 hours per fortnight (30 per week) – worked Tuesday to Friday each week

Position summary

This position reports directly to the CEO and is responsible for managing and developing;

  • Policy & Policy Positions; review of existing and development of new as part of our national systemic advocacy role taking into account the AFDO member organisations input, feedback and priorities ensuring in line with our Vision, Mission and Strategic Plan.
  • Submissions or papers; developing and providing responses to governments, enquiries, committee’s, hearings, legislative or policy changes, etc. with input and contribution from our member organisations on all areas affecting people with disability and their families.
  • Sustainability; Managing the work on AFDO sustainability, alternative funding sources and fee for service opportunities, as well as initiatives supporting our member organisations.
  • New and existing Initiatives/Projects; Managing existing as well as the development of new initiatives or projects and submissions in line with AFDO’s Vision, Mission and Strategic Plan

This position develops and maintains these areas working as required with:

AFDO Board, CEO, management, staff, volunteers, AFDO member organisations, the wider disability sector, key stakeholders, the community sector, other sectors including; employment, business and the education sector. Relevant areas at a federal, state and local government level, non-government agencies, not for profits, trusts, foundations as well as key service providers within the disability or aged sectors.

This position provides advice to the CEO on any emerging trends and issues that may affect people with disability, AFDO Members and stakeholders within the position’s areas of responsibility.

Duties

Key responsibilities

It is the responsibility of the National Manager – Policy, Sustainability, Initiatives & Projects to:

  • Manage and lead the development of submissions and responses aimed at achieving positive changes to legislation, policy and service practices in partnership with our members, stakeholders, advocacy agencies and other key organisations
  • Manage and lead the development of sustainability initiatives or project ideas in line with AFDO’s strategic direction
  • Seek out opportunities for funding or resourcing for newly developed or existing initiatives or projects
  • Prepare proposals and briefings as requested by potential partners/organisations/funders and agreed by the CEO
  • Manage fee for service opportunities for AFDO developed offerings, across; governments, non-government, disability, health, education, arts & culture, recreation, community and business sectors
  • Manage and lead the formulation and response to funding opportunities and submissions for initiatives or projects
  • Manage and lead the implementation, ongoing review and reporting of any initiatives or projects funded from various sources in line with AFDO’s strategic direction
  • Contribute, as required, on issues of importance to people with disability and their families, including strategies for their promotion and implementation
  • Develop and capture case studies and individual stories from participants in projects or initiatives for people with disability or those without, of their experience and outcomes
  • Provide advice to the CEO on emerging trends in government, community and disability sector that may impact on the lives of people with disability and/or their families, AFDO’s operation and AFDO Members, in line with the authority of this position
  • Work with the CEO as appropriate, to enhance AFDO’s national profile, maintain & strengthen existing relationships, build new strategic relationships and further develop stakeholder support
  • Contribute and work effectively as a member of the AFDO Leadership Team on strategic direction, organisation culture, staff engagement, organisation operations, sustainability strategy, member engagement, sector/stakeholder engagement, major sector issues, AFDO projects and initiatives, national advocacy and policy matters.

  • Management and development of agreed sustainability strategies for AFDO and for AFDO member organisations
  • Manage initiatives or projects on time, on budget and in accordance with agreed standards and any contractual requirements and ensure in line with AFDO strategic direction
  • Development of ideas for initiatives or projects, identifying and obtaining funding or alternative funds for implementation
  • Manage current staff roles (as listed) and any additional roles engaged for future initiatives or projects
  • Manage any volunteer(s) or tertiary students assisting with projects or initiatives and the required workflow
  • Attend and participate in AFDO meetings or other meetings on behalf of AFDO as required
  • Other duties as required relevant to the scope of this role

  • Tertiary qualification at a Degree level in a relevant discipline or relevant extensive management experience
  • Minimum 5 years professional experience in a senior policy role
  • Experience in a service development role and/or development and management of projects and programs
  • Demonstrated policy development at a high level and with proven impact
  • Demonstrated experience and success in obtaining funding or alternative funds for projects or initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including ability to influence and negotiate to build consensus on key issues
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities, organise work and achieve objectives within timelines and budget
  • Ability to work in a sensitive, complex and demanding environment with a high degree of autonomy and self-management
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Experience in systemic advocacy and research within the disability sector would be highly regarded

AFDO – Coordinator ILC ICB Project & BIDS Support

The Australian Federation of Disability Organisations (AFDO) is a Disabled People’s Organisation and a National Cross-Disability Peak, represents people with disability and their families. We are looking for an experienced project coordinator with relevant skills to fulfil this role. The current Coordinator is leaving to pursue other opportunities and has developed an Approved Activity Work Plan, commenced the project, engaged with participating AFDO member organisations and provided initial reporting and updates to the funder.

Reporting directly to the National Manager – Policy, Sustainability, Initiatives & Projects, you will be responsible for coordinating the main Information Linkages and Capacity Building Project and providing support for the AFDO developed Business Diversity & Inclusion Service.

This is a great opportunity to join AFDO with an established project as we continue to grow and be an active contributor in extending our impact.

You must have a minimum of 3 years project management experience and ideally coordination expertise.

This is a full time role working Monday to Friday each week, with an initial 12 month contract and potential for renewal subject to results. The main project is funded until mid 2023.

Position Description: Coordinator ILC ICB Project & BIDS Support

Subordinate Position/s: Volunteers or Consultants (as req)

Work Hours: Full time – 75 hours per fortnight

Position summary

The role is responsible for Coordinating the development, implementation, monitoring and reporting for the funding received via the NDIA for the ILC Grant for Individual Capacity Building on a National basis in conjunction with those AFDO members who are part of the agreed Consortium.

The Coordinator will also continue to assist with providing and contributing to newsletters or information, liaison with those organisations and stakeholders that have been part of the Business Inclusion & Diversity Services, formerly known as the Diversity Field Officer Service and operating in the Geelong region as well as providing practical advice to any licencee holders for this service. Full training will be provided for this unique element to ensure confidence and capability in delivery.

This element, whilst seen as important to ensure developed relationships and interest in this service are maintained, it is viewed as a minor component of the workload for this role.

Organisational context

The Australian Federation of Disability Organisations (AFDO) is the peak organisation in the disability sector representing people with lived experience of disability.

AFDO works to develop a community where people with disability can participate in all aspects of social, economic, political and cultural life.

AFDO provides systemic representation, policy advice, key projects to build the capacity of people with disability and their representative organisations as well as disability focused consultancy.

This project is funded through the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and has two parts operating concurrently across the entire funding period;

Part A – involves selecting/modifying a fully accessible Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system for each consortium partner, and providing training & support to each organisation to use the system and link agreed reporting
with AFDO.

Part B – includes implementing a national program, developed & co-designed by & for people with disability, or their families, in-line with each participating consortium organisations membership identified requirements. The program will provide training, mentoring, peer-support and information, resources and tools on a range of topics connecting with a minimum of 4,960 individuals at over 155 events, equating to 15 events in total provided by your organisation over
the entire activity period of the grant, February 2020 – February 2023.

The selected topics will be delivered via a mix of; face to face, peer to peer & online strategies such as: workshops, videos, mentoring by a trusted adviser, role models (volunteers), information and resource production as appropriate
for and decided in conjunction with your membership. This will provide the tools & information to empower individuals to be more independent and to assist them to take control of their lives by building capacity and support.

Business Inclusion & Diversity Services (BIDS), is an AFDO initiative and offered support to small and medium sized businesses to increase their disability confidence to employ people with disability, with the service operating in Geelong to June 2020 working with 112 businesses.

Whilst the service is no longer actively operating and seeking new businesses to engage, it is essential to continue to regularly communicate with the businesses that have been participating and region stakeholders, as well as
answer queries and support BIDS Licence holders on a national basis to maintain those connections. This role will provide advice and also contribute to communication, articles, etc. to the relevant businesses and stakeholders, although this is not expected to be a significant part of this role.

Duties

  • Coordinate the Project on time, on budget and in accordance with agreed standards and any contractual requirements

  • Manage any volunteer(s) or Consultants assisting with this project and the required workflow
  • Attend and participate in AFDO meetings or other meetings on behalf of AFDO as required
  • Other duties as required relevant to the scope of this role

Training/Qualifications (or equivalent experience):

  • Tertiary qualification at a Certificate or Degree level – project management, communications, marketing, business or related field
  • Minimum 3 years experience, in a project coordinator role for the community or services sectors.
